November – ‘Old-style bowling’ (Beugelen)
Step into tradition with the Expat Club on Sunday, November 23, from 14:00 to 17:00 at Café Beugelbaan Braam in Roermond — the city’s oldest café and home to the only indoor beugelbaan.
We’ll gather for a cozy and free afternoon of beugelen (a centuries-old Dutch folk sport, a bit like vintage bowling), mixed with drinks, snacks, and plenty of chances to connect with fellow expats. Don’t worry if you’ve never played before — we’ll start with a short history of Café Braam, an introduction to the game, and team-making before we jump in.
Your first drink and snacks are included — just bring your curiosity and a playful spirit! Spots are limited — so sign up quickly to secure your place.
Join us for an afternoon where history, tradition, and community meet.
About the sport:
Beugelen is a traditional Dutch folk sport, centuries old, and somewhat similar to old-style bowling. Players use a wooden paddle to steer a heavy ball through a central hoop on a clay court. But beugelen is more than just a game, it’s a social pastime that brings people together, sparking connection across generations. Over the years, it has grown into a proud symbol of regional identity and cultural tradition in the south of the Netherlands.
